Have you ever stolen a kiss
under the mistletoe? Ever wondered why?
Its a tradition that has winged it's way from Scandinavia. Mistletoe
was always associated with the goddess of love, Frigga. It was
believed that those that kissed under the mistletoe would have a full
year of happiness and good luck.....together! So, if last year
wasn't as cheerful as it should have been, be prepared to do more
kissing under the mistletoe during the festive season.
Do you find writing your Christmas cards
a laborious task? You need to blame Sir Henry Cole, director of
London's Victoria and Albert Museum. He commissioned the first hand
painted Christmas card in 1843. I wonder what Sir Henry would say
about his hand painted family scene being replaced with cartoon
characters and hairy men in red suits?
Do you enjoy pulling a cracker
over your Christmas dinner and finding a hat, joke/motto and present
inside? Back in 1848, it would have been a sugar almond twisted in
tissue paper, the grand invention of sweet maker, Thomas Smith. They
became a popular gift at Christmas for gentlemen to give to ladies,
so a love poem was added. The surprise gift and 'bang' were a later
addition, and likewise, those becoming and trendy paper hats that we
all love to wear!
All year we look forward to the traditional
turkey roast at Christmas, and by Boxing day we are
wishing we'd turned vegetarian. This tasty tradition started with
dear Henry VIII.
The humble Christmas pud started
life as a porridge pudding. Some bright sparks decided it needed
more flavour so added dried plums, hence the birth of the plum
pudding.
A Christmas music fact - White
Christmas is the biggest selling Christmas song of all time with
over 350 million copies being sold on sheet music and record. |
